Review: Hybrid Children
Actually there was enough action with the Ankkarock festival 2010 in nearby Vantaa going on on this weekend in August. But if Hybrid Children invite to a gig, the rock scene of Helsinki accepts the invitation unhesitatingly. The consequence: The location was full to bursting, as we experienced it that night at "On The Rocks"... In front of the stage were prominent concert guests like Private Line guitarist Jack Smack. But also on stage frontman Jasse has a prominent guest, no-one less than Santa Cruz' guitar player Johnny who served the stringed instrument. But who was thinking now the rock scene of Finland's capital was only here that night because Jasse is a welcome guest at the local parties and concerts: Far from it! What you were getting there was a Punk Rock show at its best I enjoyed for the first but not the last time that night, that's for sure.

Since almost two decades the Finns are firmly established in their home country so of course they know how to rock non-stop from the very first second till the last note has faded away. You may be surprised when you see the likeable and modest Jasse "in action" for the first time; indeed, the stage seems to be his element. But who expected that he talked big time or did silly poses was wrong again. The band and the audience just rocked to songs which were Punk Rock but have nothing in common with scratchy Punk. And how that sounds, Hybrid Children demonstrated lately with their seventh full-length album "Fight As One" in spring 2009. Because of the fact that it is never too late to buy a record, Hybrid Children seemed to want to seduce us to do exactly this, at least that day's setlist was full of songs of the mentioned album: The title track "Fight As One", "Blackheart Baby", "Motörbreath"... Just to name a few...
To play in front of a banner with your own name instead of in front of the usual "On The Rocks" logo is more an exception than the rule in this club. But, hey, these are Hybrid Children... And they can even lure you to a gig in a night between two very busy festival days. I have been driven to here just by curiosity but all the other concert visitors might have known what was expecting them here - and that it totally pays off to attend this additional concert, even if there was already enough action with the festival that weekend... <<-- zurück / back
