Recently I had the honour to see Danzig live on stage for the first time. Unfortunately, the show was anything but a pleasure (Open air festival with almost uninterrupted rainy weather, showtime with a delay of 45 minutes etc.) but we are not unforgiving, especially not with a band whose singer owns such an unique voice like Glenn Danzig does. And so we put their newest disc "Deth Red Sabaoth" into the stereo...

While listening to the fat guitar sounds which open "Hammer Of The Gods" I think at first "Good that we are not unforgiving!", just to wonder about the production in the next moment 'cause as much as I agree with the opinion that too sleek productions are not the best, at least for this kind of music: This track sounds a bit too unfinished and like it has been recorded directly in the band's rehearsal room. It's a pity 'cause essentially it's a very cool song and production-related they could have gotten much more of it.

The second song "The Revengeful" is opened by fat guitar sounds, too, but here the sound is much better than on "Hammer Of The Gods".

It's not a rare case that the opener is the best song of the album at the same time. In those cases the rest can only be disappointing but here the case is different 'cause already the second song is better than the first one, the third track ("Rebel Spirits") holds the tension constantly and if we would draw a chart to illustrate the album, the graph would achieve the highest point with the next two following tracks. First there is "Black Candy" which is in a similar style like "She Rides" and therefore predestined for a striptease. After that "On A Wicked Night" is following which reminds a bit of Type O Negative's "Christian Woman" due to the melancholy atmosphere, even if it becomes rockier in the middle of the song.

"Deth Red Moon" makes me think of Viva Zwei inevitably... How well it would have fitted into their programme! Regrettably, Viva Zwei doesn't exist anymore since meanwhile nearly 10 years...

After "Deth Red Moon" the graph of tension in our fictive chart unfortunately drops. None of the tracks are bad but somehow the last ones doesn't catch your attention. Even if you are listening to them the third or fourth time it's still like music in the background, with the exception of the beautiful semi-instrumental composition "Pyre Of Souls, Part I - Incanticle".

From that point of view, "Deth Red Sabaoth" is maybe the ideal album for all the rocker guys out there who are looking for the perfect soundtrack to score with a girl: Some rock songs in the beginning so she won't become suspicious, with a bit support from your part she will maybe take her cloths off already while "Black Candy" is played - or better: She does it to the song - and the background music at the end... Well, it's background music... You hopefully will be busy with something else then...

Another thing which should be honourably mentioned is the cover artwork which is designed by none other than the American comic artist Joe Chiodo. Especially in times of mp3 downloads such a good cover artwork is THE inducement and probably also the only inducement to buy CDs at all nowadays.

New, nutritious food for the playlist and a nice decoration for the CD shelf - What more could you want?
